Bringing home a new puppy is one of the most exciting moments for any dog owner. At the same time, the first couple of days can be a big adjustment for your puppy. Everything around them is new — new people, new smells, new routines, and a completely new environment.
Your puppy has just left the only home they have ever known. Because of this, the first 48 hours should focus on helping them feel safe, comfortable, and relaxed as they settle into their new life with you.
Here are a few things to keep in mind during those first couple of days.
Give Your Puppy Time to Adjust
Your puppy may be a little nervous or quiet when they first arrive home. This is completely normal. Some puppies will explore right away, while others may take a little time to build confidence.
Try to keep things calm and relaxed during the first day. Avoid overwhelming your puppy with too many visitors or new experiences immediately. Let them explore their new environment at their own pace and start getting familiar with their new home.
Show Them Where Their Potty Area Is
One of the first things you should do when you arrive home is show your puppy where they are supposed to go to the bathroom.
Our puppies are introduced to pellet training before leaving Monster Bully Kennels, so continuing this system at home can make potty training much easier. We recommend using Nature’s Bedding Pellets, which can usually be found at most feed stores for a very affordable price.
Place the pellets in a designated potty area and bring your puppy there regularly, especially after eating, drinking, playing, or waking up from naps.

Keep the First Day Simple
The first day should be about rest, exploration, and bonding.
Your puppy will likely be tired from the trip and the change in environment. Allow them time to rest and avoid too much stimulation early on.
Spend time with your puppy, talk to them calmly, and let them start to learn that you are their new source of comfort and safety.
Feeding Your Puppy
Try to keep your puppy on the same food they were eating before leaving Monster Bully Kennels. Sudden food changes can upset a puppy’s stomach.
We recommend continuing with a salmon and sweet potato based dog food. In our experience, chicken and beef tend to be two of the most common triggers for skin issues in bully breeds, which is why we prefer salmon based formulas.
We also recommend adding water to the food. This helps soften the kibble, slows the puppy down while eating, and may help reduce the risk of digestive issues.

The First Night
The first night is often the biggest adjustment for a puppy. They are used to sleeping with their littermates, so sleeping alone may feel unfamiliar at first.
Some puppies may whine or cry during the night. This is normal and usually improves quickly as they adjust to their new routine.
Placing the crate near your bed during the first few nights can help your puppy feel more secure. The sound of your voice and your presence nearby can be very comforting.
Expect a Learning Process
Remember that your puppy is still learning about the world around them. Accidents may happen, and it may take a little time for routines to develop.
Patience and consistency are the most important things during the first few days.
With proper guidance, structure, and care, your puppy will quickly begin to feel comfortable and confident in their new home.
